ARTIST’S STATEMENT
My main subject is communication: whether it’s a dialogue between the materials I choose to work with and the subject matter of the painting itself; a dialogue among the shapes, colours, shadows, and light that I paint;
Rénold Laurent, visual artist and poet, was born in Source Bretoux, a village at the foot of the Marbial valley, near Jacmel, Haiti. He made his debut in painting when he was ten years old, under the direction of his father, Maccène Laurent; he has since established his own unique artistic style and perspective. His poetry was effectively already in his abstract paintings when he met the Haitian poet writer and publisher, Christophe Ph. Charles, in 2000—an encounter that sparked his interest in written poetry. He has published several collections of poems with Choucoune Editions.
